Hola - So my new engine runs very well, but I notice a new sound that wasn't there with the old motor. When slowing down I hear a whining sound that goes away when I pull the clutch in. It does seem to change pitch with road/engine speed, but I don't notice it when on the gas - the bike may just mask it with other sounds.

Should I be concerned?

Gearbox, I've notice it on mine since the last oil change too (I'm using Motul synthetic blend).

It is the cams. You just need to sand down your shims a tad.

Lube and adjust your chain. Bet it goes away.

If that's a joke...it's not funny. So ask my why I'm laughing.

This is my guess. I soaked the chain in gasoline to get all the nasty chain wax gunk off, and while I've lubed it - it wasn't a quality job.

I'm guessing the chain is a little tight, and dry. I noticed it jumping around a bit while I let it run in first gear on the centerstand - just to see if I could hear the whining. So I think some of the links are stiff.

Or it could be the gearbox - because it goes away when I disengage the clutch. Either way, it doesn't sound like I should be too concerned - the clutch engages fine without slipping.

Mine's always had a little bit of a whine to it. I think earplugs and a stock exhaust make it easier to hear, but it's always been there.

Not to say yours isn't louder than it should be and that you don't have an issue, but I hear one about all the time...modest, but it's always there.

pato - I believe you get the brass ring. I listened to the motor this morning on my commute in and it almost sounds like a Tiger. But I'm pretty certain it's the gearbox. I've got Mobil 1 moto-oil in there, so I know it's well protected. I've got a 200 mile loop planned this weekend, so we'll see what's what.

But at this point, I'm not concerned.

Use a "mechanic's stethoscope", a LONG screwdriver with the handle pressed to your ear and the tip touched to various locations in search of the source of the noise.
