Real moral of the story- MAKE AN EXTRA KEY OR 2- ONE TAPED UP INSIDE SOMEWHERE WHERE YOU CAN GET AT IT AND ONE UNDER THE SEAT AS WELL. :)

FWIW, I had a key made for my F650 Funduro one time. If I recall correctly, they were able to use a Volvo car key blank. Problem is, now I've lost it and should prolly do it again. Anyone know the Volvo blank number?

On a side note, while traveling my buddy has my spare key and I have his.

And the only problem with taping it to the underside of the seat is that you need the key to get there. Anywhere else that you don't need a key to get to, I wouldn't consider a very safe place.

The smartass reply is "you got the right key, just the wrong bike" But really, I feel your pain. I have 3 keys and always carry two with me. One is well hidden on the bike in a small gap in the fabric of the tank bag. But I have never lost a car key or my wallet. I still have my Social Security card in there that I got when I was 13. I guess my time is due eh?

This guy used a smaller headed blank from JMA in Europe- not sure what the blank number is but will try and find out. He had it in stock.

Problem was, that I never really rode the bike- it was bought, taken home, and shipped to France where it stayed in a garage until a month ago. I saw the key early in the summer, but can't remember where, and I could go crazy looking for it in my truck, my bags, my Airstream and all my crap. I took what I thought was the easy way out.

You'll probably never have the same problem- I never did and never will again, I keep track of these usually very well. I collect old Airstream trailers and have their keys all catalogued and in order- I have over 30 Airstreams to deal with, along with my motorcycles...

Hi, I watched the tech at BMW pop the seat in 10 seconds. Maybe need practice, but would have it there just in case.

Good idea about a buddy key, if on a trip with a buddy.

I'll tape this one up somewhere and make it hidden and will just need to slice it out with a blade if its necessary, but I doubt I'll ever experience this again...

Now watch me lose this one in 3 days. :)

Keys worked, finally! The cerrajeria re-worked the key according to the ignition, and the result is a sticky feeling, clunky, but working ignition. When I lock and unlock the fork, have to move it around and feel the barrel slide in and out gently, but its working!

Rode it home, about 9 miles, and it was not good. Popping and over revving, I lowered the idle when I parked it, but the exhaust was red hot- super red- looked like it would melt.

This thing is going to need a lot of work before I can trust it on even a 2 hour trip. Wish me luck.

Seems to me your first step would be to go to the Technical FAQs. And type "key blank" into the search. And find this info... (key info applies only to Classics... as the FI models use a different style key). http://faq.f650.com/FAQs/SecurityFAQ.htm#General%20Questions

upon losing ALL keys, I removed the fuel cap assembly. The locksmith was able to make that key from that for $20. What I found out after that is that the ignition has more pins than the seat lock and gas cap. The locksmith put the key in the ignition and kept turning it with vice grips to make impressions on the key body. He then used a standard "rat tail" file to match up to the impressions made by turning the body with the vice grips. Easy. The key blank that he used was an iLco # X144. Total cost $50 with three keys. It took an hour.

Justinglory - that locksmith is a very clever and dangerous fellow. Either make friends with him and get rich or guard your home address and stay clear.

Nice to have the key blank number in the files too. Thx.

I have sprinkled 4 full sets of keys to my bike around in the logical places. Still looking for the perfect on-bike hiding spot though.

consider yourself lucky to have a bike without fancy stuff in the key :-)

if it was a modern H*nda you'd have to replace the ECU at the same time if you couldn't find the special red key supplied with the bike
