Will the DK or Parts Unlimited ones work on a Classic?

One of them worked on my classic: I'm pretty sure it was the brake lever (as implied earlier in this thread). The other one (clutch?) definitely did not work.

I have no source yet for a cheap clutch lever. Well, maybe I do if you actually need one: check out the junk yards! I got a VR from a used GS off of ebay. I forget the name of the salvage operation that was selling it, but they're around. And a nice durable piece like a clutch lever is much less scary to buy used.

I had good luck with Re-Psycle BMW Parts in Ohio. Both levers were ~$24/each; not a whole lot cheaper but better than new. Tiny bit worn but in fine working condition, perfect for backups. Also found some on ebay for cheap.

I bought a few cheapies last year and they are nice for a backup, but they are way more brittle than the OEM. I bent an OEM lever badly on a trip and was able to take it off and beat it back into shape with a brick I borrowed from the yard at motel I stayed in. The cheap ones just snap.

Definitely a key backup item to have though. Just don't be too lax after breaking one and ride around with a cheapie with no spare.

The first lever I broke was when I was camping with my girl and we jumped on the bike for a romantic little scoot down the trail to a lake where we watched a beautiful sunset and two swans swam across the lake to us and put on a show. It was so nice, it ended up being dark when we left. Just putting along up a hill I had a fluke where a branch diagonal to my path drew my front wheel into a rut and tipped us over. All good, except no clutch lever! I was stuck. Fortunately, I was able to take apart an allen wrench set and use the holder for a lever, capturing the lead cable end between the through bolt and the plastic holder, otherwise my experience when getting 3 miles back would not have been so sweet, had it been on foot.

I wish ASV made a lever for them like they do for my XT350. Something simple that they recommend is leave the perch a little loose so if you go down on it, the lever can spin around the handlebar instead of break off. Sort of embarrassed that I didn't think of that, but I'll shoulder the embarrassment for the chance that it might help someone.

Ed

Can I recommend some hand guards? No more bent levers with these babies.

Will this really fit a 2006 Dakar?? It doesn't look like it will, but it would great if it actually does...

Yes it will. See post #2 of this thread. The only thing you lose is the three position adjust wheel on the OE bit, but who uses that anyways? ;)

the dennis kirk levers fit my '01 gs but they do not have the correct "bump" to hit the safety switch. The bike will start in gear and you will go rolling forward with it. I always pull the lever in now to start. Caveat emptor YMMV

I need a aftermarket/replacement clutch lever and a shift lever for a 2003 F650GS. The DennisKirk website says the Parts Unlimited clutch lever #573291 only fits 2005 and 2006 bikes.

Does anyone know of a alternative to oem for a 2003 clutch lever and or shift lever?

Thanks

-Ken

Just installed the Dennis Kirk clutch lever on my 2006 Dakar. It fits like a glove. Beats shelling out $100 bucks for an OEM lever!

Moose part# MH12 designed for a XR250R and it fits perfectly.

hi Inmates,
i find this thread kinda wacked...i too want the cheap levers that of course fit the model i own. i have a 2002 gs. but from reading all the feedback here i am still 50/50 on whether aftermarket levers will fit. AND if they do fit (say from Dennis Kirk) the older gs bikes why are they listed and sold to fit only 2005 and up?
come spring i will most likely gamble and order some from Dennis Kirk...and i can always return them if need be.
thanks all for the info above in this thread and all others.

Looks like there is some confusion on wheather we are talking about a lever or a shifter here. The dennis kirk lever (that goes on the handle bars) fits these bikes. Not sure about the pre '01. In my expirence, the D Kirk lever did not activate the cutout switch on the handlebars. So my bike will start in gear. I am not sure if it can be adjusted. I just pull the clutch in when I start the bike or make sure I'm in neutral. I did not order the D Kirk brake lever.

The shifter is another story. I used this one...

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/2/ ... Parts.aspx

remove the * in H*nda and replace w/ o for the link to work. Fits perfect. Looks trick.

I had posted this over in Maintenance forum and then I saw this post so thought I would ad in here also. This is for all you Classic owners.....

Wanted to get a spare brake and clutch lever for my road kit. Dealer wanted $48 each, plus tax. Found this place

http://www.jjmotorcycleaccessories.com/ ... -265-c.asp

and got both levers, shipped from Wales, U.K. for a bit over $26, net savings about $80! Levers arrived in about 10 days and appear to be of good quality. I actually purchased through his ebay store http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/JJ-Motorc ... QQ_armrsZ1 which made the whole transaction very easy. He also has GS levers for about 8 British Pounds. Be sure to ask for combined shipping and to have the VAT discounted.
